Doubt has been cast over the future of All Creatures Great and Small after a star of the show admitted he doesn't know what lies ahead.

All Creatures Great and Small, based on the bestselling novels by author and real-life vet James Herriot, was revived back in 2020, airing on Channel 5. The family-friendly drama is set in the 1930s in Yorkshire and follows the previous BBC series of the same name that aired back in the late 70s.

In February 2024, Channel 5 bosses announced the show had been recommissioned for a season five and six.

Following the release of season five, Nicholas Ralph, who stars as veterinary surgeon James Herriot, discussed the show's future.

He told The Sun: "As far as All Creatures goes, we love making it and can't wait to go back out next year, and we'll see what the future holds.

"I don't know what the future holds for All Creatures, but yeah, as far as we’re concerned as long as people keep watching and enjoying it, I'm sure we'll endeavour to keep making it."

Fans will be treated with at least one more instalment as production for the sixth series is set to kick off next month.

The Christmas special of All Creatures Great and Small left viewers in tears.

During the episode, Skeldale House's residents learned how the HMS Repulse had been sunk by Japanese fire off the coast of Malaysia.

Housekeeper Mrs Hall's son, Edward, was among the crew serving on the Repulse but with approximately half of the personnel lost, his fate was left unknown.

Mrs Hall checked a newspaper for Edward's name among confirmed casualties - and it wasn't there. She later received a letter from her son, however, it was dated days before the attack so fate still remained unclear.

Later in the show, it was revealed that Edward had survived the attack and although injured, he was recuperating in a Singapore hospital.

Viewers rushed to X to share their relief following the news as one person wrote: "There you go, wrecking my heart again! Cannot wait to see the new season."

A second agreed: "Made me cry! Brilliant!"

Another echoed: "In tears! What a wonderful episode! Loved it!"
