Ex-Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg is working on a solo album

Former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has revealed that he’s planning to record a solo album this year.

Weinberg – who joined Slipknot in 2014 and was sacked from the Iowan metal outfit in November 2023 – took to social media to share his plans for the new year on December 31.

Though now a drummer for punk legends Suicidal Tendencies, Weinberg has shared that he plans to “record more music in the studio” this year. This will seemingly take shape as his debut solo project – which he says has been in the works for years, and will seeming see him play guitar as well.

He wrote on Instagram: “One of my ambitions for 2025 is to record more music in the studio — starting with my own material I’ve been writing for quite a while. Some of which I’ve been working away at since my early 20’s.

He continued: “I haven’t touched these songs since then, until recently feeling inspiration to pick the guitar back up and kick this stuff around again. It’s been a fulfilling experience, and I’ll tell you — I’m starting to like where these songs are headed. It feels good to finally set the intention of releasing some of this new music in the coming year.”

In July 2024, Weinberg appeared on a podcast, where he shared that he was “not quite yet really ready” to talk about being fired from Slipknot. After the Iowa band announced the drummer’s departure in late 2023, Weinberg said he was “heartbroken and blindsided” by the news, and went on to share that despite that, he “wouldn’t trade for the world” his “memories and experiences” with them.

“Truth be told, I’m at kind of a point where I’m not quite yet really ready to talk about it, really. And that’s not to dismiss the conversation, but I’ve spent time, and spend time, just processing the entire experience.

“And the experience not being the last six months, but really the last 10 years [of playing with Slipknot]. And finally, in a way, processing all of that. And doing it in kind of what I would consider the responsible way.”

Meanwhile, Slipknot recently wrapped up touring for 2024 in London, where they performed rarities from their celebrated self-titled debut album. The band will resume touring Europe in June. Visit here for tickets.

Last month, Slipknot’s Clown spoke to NME and shared an update on the band’s long-awaited ‘lost’ album, ‘Look Outside Your Window’. The record was recorded by the founding member and percussionist – real name Shawn Crahan – alongside Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson and Jim Root at the same time as they were working on 2008’s ‘All Hope Is Gone’. In recent years, its release has been teased by the band, although nothing has yet come to fruition.

“I did say [to NME last year that] it was going to be in 2024, and I gave it the best fight that I could to make it this year,” he said. “What I can tell you is that I showed Corey the final artwork two days ago. It is happening, but unfortunately, because of Christmas and New Year and the way business works, I can’t slide it in this year.

“But you have my word, it’s out of my hands now. It’s being moved on, the money has been spent and there is a plan. The management has it and it is coming out.”

Elsewhere in the latest NME interview with Clown, the percussionist reflected on Slipknot’s plans for new material.

“Eloy [Casagrande, drummer] is in the band and there’s something happening between the nine of us right now that is very fun,” he said.  “A lot is floating around and we probably have several albums in us right now. As for how things feel, I’m being completely honest with you now, it’s like a cloud has left.”
