The announcement comes hot on the heels of the much-praised two-part Christmas special, which aired over the festive period.

The holiday episodes saw the team at Nonnatus House facing seasonal challenges, with the Christmas cheer intertwined with the show’s trademark heart-wrenching moments.

The new series, set in 1970, will delve deeper into the ever-changing social and medical landscape of the era.

Producers have teased storylines that explore the ongoing evolution of healthcare and societal attitudes, with a focus on how the nurses and midwives adapt to new technologies and cultural shifts.

In addition to the return of fan-favourite characters like Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann), and Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George), the upcoming series will introduce new faces and challenges for the residents of Poplar.

Executive producer Heidi Thomas previously hinted at the emotional weight of the upcoming episodes, saying: "The 1970s were a time of extraordinary change for women and families in Britain.

"We’re exploring those changes through the lens of our wonderful characters, and as always, there will be laughter, tears, and plenty of surprises."

Fans were quick to share their excitement on social media following the announcement. One commented: "Can’t wait! January can’t come soon enough. I’m ready for more tears and joy!"

Another wrote: "Best news of the year! This show is my absolute favourite. Nonnatus House forever!"

Fans were left reaching for the tissues on the second instalment of the BBC show’s festive special on Thursday (December 26).

The hard-hitting scenes offered up a slew of dramatic storylines, including a frantic search for Reggie and a dramatic birth scene starring former The Traitors contestant Maddy Smedley.

But one scene in particular had viewers in a frenzy as Christmas at Nonnatus House got underway and two characters reunited for the special Boxing Day episode.

Season 13 ended on a cliffhanger as Trixie Aylward said she would be moving to New York to be with her husband. But as fans eagerly awaited her fate on the show, she made an appearance in the episode alongside former nun-turned-nurse, Shelagh Turner. The pair were seen partnering up to help a family battle against appalling poverty, an incoming baby and the flu.
