Netflix's Squid Game fans think they're 'hallucinating' after 'insane' twist in season 2

Squid Game (Season 2): Official trailer

Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Squid Game season 2.

Netflix’s biggest series ever has finally returned and it’s the perfect binge-watch for subscribers who still have piles of leftovers to get to and plenty of time to lounge in front of the TV.

However, Squid Game season two is far from festive cheer as Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) and a new batch of players must endure another series of brutal games for the chance of winning a huge cash prize.

Expect plenty of bloodshed, betrayals and stunning twists in the next seven episodes of this wildly popular Korean drama, with another outing to come by the end of 2025.

Die-hard fans have already started tuning in, and one particular reveal at the end of episode three, 001, caught them so off guard they barely believed what they were seeing.

Following another chaotic round of Red Light, Green Light, the players must take a vote on whether or not to continue the games. Unbeknownst to Gi-hun, the last player to vote, 001, is Hwang In-ho, aka the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), the mysterious overseer of the games and a previous winner.

“I thought, ‘Is this really happening or am I hallucinating?’” one fan exclaimed on X (formerly Twitter) after tuning into episode three.

“But it’s true 001 & Front Man are the same person! Did he do all this just to make those people stay? And now he’s also going to participate in those deadly games? OMFG!”

“I didn't see that coming. Player 001,” someone else wrote.

Another fan shared: “I have soooo many questions! Is 001 the cops brother (the main bad guy)?”

A third viewer said: “No way number 001 is that person [shocked face]” and another stunned fan added: “Player 001 completely shocked me…”

The conversation continued on Reddit, where one amazed viewer simply commented: “Holy s***, what a twist.”

“Incredible twist,” someone else remarked. “It's an awesome parallel to the narrative deceit of the first season, while we have an insider's perspective this time around. This mirror scenario will make for compelling character foil situations.

“This is how you can effectively repeat the same scenarios and settings, while still making it feel fresh and engaging, by changing just enough for unpredictability factors like this.”

And one final fan replied: “The fact that the f***ing frontman was/is player 001 in this game is insane to me.”

If you’ve already made it to episode three, there’s four more episodes left to get your heart pounding, plus a third and final season still to come within the year.

The new season is already scoring rave reviews, though many fans have been taking issue with where the last episode leaves things.

Squid Game season 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
