How Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Has Kept Up with the Changing Face of Luxury

Through generations of refining and redesigning, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has remained a symbol of luxury and comfort-focused design. Having sold thousands of models worldwide, the series continues to be a go-to for those in the market for a high-end sedan. So, how exactly has the brand stayed true to its iconic heritage in today’s landscape of luxury?

The answer lies in the brand’s 360° approach to design. Understanding the purpose of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class – from everyday driving to chauffeured traveling – it has nailed down the various requirements for its models. Mercedes-Maybach has ensured it keeps these needs in mind, paying close attention to every detail in order to give its prestigious clientele an unfaltering series of automobiles that lend to a palatial drive, whether they’re sat in the driver’s seat or the rear.

For the initial launch of the Mercedes-Maybach series, the brand came up with a template of what future sedans would look like. Based on the already popular Mercedes Benz S-Class line, the debut model was fitted with a V-12 engine and extended wheelbase and therefore featured an enlarged rear cabin and top-of-the-range noise, vibration, and harshness measures that closely weaved the S-Class series together with Maybach’s unique characteristics to create a fit-for-purpose, limousine-style car.

Fast-forward to its latest Mercedes-Maybach S-Class model and the brand’s signature imprint is still very noticeable. From the outside, the car boasts a sleek, long-line silhouette with the Maybach signature hand-painted, horizontal two-tone paint job. Inside, however, the luxurious S-Class is brought to the modern-day with cutting-edge technology.

Upon entering the car, passengers can now benefit from electronically operated rear doors which can also be controlled on the driver’s side. The MBUX infotainment system with a 12.8-inch OLED central display can be enjoyed on any journey, thanks to active ambient lighting and active road noise compensation. Not forgetting the ENERGIZING COMFORT, massage functions, and refrigerated compartment that add the finishing touch to deliver ultimate comfort.

Taking a closer look at the motorization, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class series still boasts some of the most unique fittings. Out of the entire Mercedes line-up – and in fact, competitors like Bentley – the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 stands as the only vehicle to be equipped with the V12 engine which is exclusively produced in-house as opposed to at any other external entity. It shows how heritage craftsmanship has been preserved down to the hidden features.

This being said, the brand hasn’t been shy in inviting creative collaborators to switch up its Mercedes-Maybach S-Class limited-edition iterations. Among his final endeavors, Virgil Abloh reimagined the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class as part of his visionary PROJECT MAYBACH initiative, blending the avant-garde with a contemporary design ethos. This creative exploration paralleled the exclusive Haute Voiture where luxury craft and high fashion converged to redefine automotive elegance.

Most recently, yacht manufacturer Robbe & Berking marked its 150th anniversary by also offering a classic interpretation of the same model. The limited-edition model saw the two-vehicle producers infuse walnut trims and sail-inspired stitching to create a unique maritime-style model. Despite each collaborator coming from fields outside the automotive realm, their creations have highlighted new pathways for Maybach, ones that simultaneously honor the aspirational quality of the brand.

With all milestones considered, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class series is a testament to how the brand has balanced new luxury details with its original template to offer up an almost futuristic vision that still speaks to its high-end clientele.
