Fans of the hit Yellowstone prequel, 1923, are expressing concern as one of their favourite elements seems to be largely absent from the new trailer.

The preview of the Paramount drama's second season centres around a battle for the Dutton ranch, with characters Cara (played by Helen Mirren) and Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) preparing to defend their property.

Their nephew Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) sets the stage in a voiceover before the clip shows him on the phone confirming his return home.

Viewers are then treated to a thrilling glimpse of the upcoming conflict, which sees Jacob once again confronting business magnate Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), the only individual capable of intimidating the Duttons' other adversary, Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn).

"I feel like this is about as far as I feel like being pushed," Jacob ominously warns Whitfield. Despite a brief appearance of a tearful Liz Strafford (Michelle Randolph), Jack Dutton's (Darren Mann) wife, and several scenes featuring Jacob's formidable wife Clara, the trailer is noticeably lacking in its portrayal of the show's female characters.

Only a fleeting image of fan-favourite Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) is shown, sparking fears among fans that she may be written out early in the season. One viewer responded to the trailer on Reddit: "A disturbing lack of Alexandra in this teaser.

"Only the one brief shot of her running has me worried they're going to kill her off as a way of sending Spencer off the deep end", reports the Mirror US.

A hopeful fan speculated: "I was thinking maybe they didn't have Alexandra because if people still haven't watched season 1 it kind of spoils it to know she's a main character ending up with Spencer.

"Also, hoping they just don't want to spoil her arrival at the ranch!!! [fingers crossed emoji]."

"Ummmmmm where is Alex," someone else asked.

Another expressed disappointment: "The magnificent love story with Alex is my biggest reason for watching - I'm going to be very, very, sad if she's been killed off. Alex is the kicker in a glass of champagne."

Speculation was rife as viewers noticed Jacob and Cara in tears at a hospital in the trailer, leading to discussions that they wouldn't be so upset over a character they barely knew.

On YouTube, the trailer sparked similar reactions, with fans crossing their fingers for Spencer and Alexandra's reunion following their African escapades.

"I just need Spencer and Alex back together," a commenter pleaded, accompanied by a crying emoji.

"Taylor [Sheridan, creator] should not spoil this show please, let Spencer and Alex be happy," implored another viewer.

As the second season of 1923 approaches, fans are steeling themselves for potential heartbreak, yet holding onto hope that the couple's romance will endure.

1923 season 2 premieres Sunday, February 23 on Paramount+.
