GMB: Sean Fletcher delivers breaking news about inflation

Good Morning Britain star Sean Fletcher halted the show to share some breaking news.

During the latest instalment of the ITV programme, the 50-year-old joined presenters Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway in the studio to deliver other news happening around the country.

The presenter went on to announce that inflation has risen once again, meaning the cost of living is continuing to rise.

Inflation rose to 2.6 per cent in the year to November, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday (December 18).

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure of inflation is above the Bank of England’s 2 per cent target and marks an increase from 2.3 per cent in the year to October.

Richard Gaisford added: "Two months in a row now inflation has gone up above the Bank of England's target of two per cent."

Presenting from a shop in Croydon, Richard revealed that Christmas trees have doubled in price over the past year.

Rising motor fuel and clothing prices were among the key drivers behind the increase.

However, other factors have also pushed inflation higher.

Richard said: "We've had average earnings outstripping inflation. Businesses passing those costs on to customers will get rising national insurance for employers.

"With all of that in mind, it's very unlikely that when the Bank of England sits down at lunch time tomorrow to discuss interest rates, that we're going to see any sort of change. They're likely to stay exactly where they are."

Commenting on the new figures, ONS Chief Economist Grant Fitzner said: "Inflation rose again this month as prices of motor fuel and clothing increased this year but fell a year ago.

"This was partially offset by air fares, which traditionally dip at this time of year, but saw their largest drop in November since records began at the start of the century."

According to the ONS, air fares dropped by 19.3% in November 2024, compared to a 13.9% decline during the same month last year. The decrease was largely driven by lower fares on European routes.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves added: "I know families are still struggling with the cost of living and today's figures are a reminder that for too long the economy has not worked for working people.

"Since we arrived real wages have grown at their fastest in three years. That's an extra £20-a-week after inflation. But I know there is more to do. I want working people to be better off, which is what our Plan for Change will deliver."
