Former This Morning host Eamonn Holmes has made his first public contact with his soon-to-be ex-wife and co-presenter Ruth Langsford, through a tentative and tenuous show of support on social media.

The celebrity couple announced that they were seeking a divorce in June and they quickly went separate ways, with the pair said to be seeking a speedy resolution in the coming year.

Breaking an almost six month stint of silence post-separation that has seen Holmes, 65, move on to a new relationship, the former presenter joined thousands of others in liking one of Langsford's, 64, recently shared hopes for a family Christmas. Taking to Instagram, she shared news of a tragic fall that had just hospitalised her 93-year-old mother.

Accompanying an image of her mother's clasped hands and their shared half-finished crossword, Langsford wrote: "Hospital visit….thank you all so much for your lovely messages and well wishes for my darling Mum. She’ll be in hospital for a bit longer yet, but she’s in pretty good spirits considering and I hope she’ll be home for Christmas."

Liking his ex's post, Holmes agreed with the tens of thousands of others, including celebrities like Cat Deeley and Loose Women's Nadia Sawalha, in wishing his former mother-in-law a speedy recovery.

Despite the distance and new beau, perhaps Holmes was moved to hear of the impact of the hospitalisation on his ex's festive plans. "No dancing in my kitchen peeling the veg for my darling Mum this Christmas," Langsford told her more than 1 million followers following her mother Joan's December fall which fractured her pelvis.

const loadOvpScript=()=>{let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=118222&playerApiId=v118222');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)};window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v118222"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript();ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript();ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

But despite this tragic fall, the former This Morning host and Loose Women panellist remained hopeful that they might still be able to spend Christmas together. Ruth Langsford said on Instagram: "She’s ok…ish, no surgery required thank goodness but she needs rest and time to heal now. She’s in hospital at the moment but I’m hoping to get her home soon."

With the estranged couple hoping to settle their divorce quickly and leave their £3.5 million home with Ruth, according to reports in the Daily Mail, this is unlikely to be a homecoming with Holmes present. Though, the 65-year-old former presenter has embarked on a new chapter, dating counsellor Katie Alexander, a woman 22 years younger than him.

Sources close to the two are reported as saying: "Ruth is keen to stay in their marital home as it is where she is settled, Eamonn on the other hand wants to get out and make a fresh start.

"They aren't dragging their heels and want this settled and done as quickly as possible."

But with her mother in the hospital with a serious injury, it appears that some things have come into perspective for Langsford. She added in her social media post: "This time last year she fell and broke her hip but recovered well…she’s a very strong woman so I’m sure she’ll recover from this too.

"Put’s life and what’s important into perspective eh? Happy Christmas!"
