BBC University Challenge viewers issue same complaint about 'outrageous' episode

BBC viewers were left stunned after watching the latest episode of University Challenge, after one team completely dominated the other in a powerful display.

Exeter University went head to head against Bristol in a bid to win a place in the quarter-finals. As the quiz started, it became rather one-sided as Bristol answered all the starter questions correctly and picked up momentum.

Meanwhile, Exeter didn't manage to answer any questions until towards the end of the show, with Amol saying that the team were 'unlucky' and that they were 'beaten by an outstanding team.'

Bristol gave a commanding performance with 290 points, with Exeter only manage a poor effort of 35. Fans of the show couldn't help but react online, saying that Bristol were 'outrageous.'

One person typed: "Bristol's a great university with a great team this season, though perhaps in danger of becoming insufferably smug. #UniversityChallenge."

A second also said: "Bristol have been brutally merciless #universitychallenge." A third also chimed in: "#universitychallenge biggest thrashing ever? Got to be surely?"

A fourth also said: "Admit it. How many of you have just Googled 'what's the lowest ever score a team has had on #UniversityChallenge?'"

The beloved BBC show made its return earlier this year, with broadcaster Amol Rajan returning as host after taking over from Jeremy Paxman.

Jeremy had long been the face of University Challenge, but was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2021 and recently admitted that he considered assisted suicide.

In an interview with Saga Magazine, Jeremy shared that he thought about signing up for Dignitas, the assisted-dying clinic in Switzerland. He has previously shared that his illness has worsened over the years.

He revealed: "Yes, I have [thought about it]. But then I saw the Terry Pratchett film [Choosing To Die] and I couldn’t help noticing how scruffy some of the staff were in dirty T-shirts.

"I’m afraid the lack of personal hygiene rather put me off. I think it’s very hard on those left behind, too." He also touched on how despite being against it himself, he supports "anyone who makes this choice".

University Challenge airs on Mondays on BBC One at 8:30pm.
