BBC Mastermind fans dumbfounded at host Clive Myrie's bizarre introduction
BBC viewers were left scratching their heads on the latest episode of the BBC quiz show, Mastermind, on Monday (December 16).
Four new brainiacs joined host Clive Myrie to tackle their obscure specialist subjects in hopes of winning the coveted Glass Bowl prize.
But it wasn’t the player’s general knowledge that caught viewers’ attention. The 60-year-old presenter often addresses the audience with a short monologue before introducing the contestants and his latest address appeared to take on a humorous tone that didn’t sit well with fans.
The host said to viewers: “So, you think you’re hard do you? You want a piece of me? Is that why you’re here? No I’m not talking to you, dear viewer, but to our four contenders quizzes, pirates, who all believe they’ve got the goods on me. The answers to all my questions, the solutions to all my conundrums. Well we’re gonna find out if that’s the case but remember this is the big league.”

“I can't cope with Clive Myrie doing smack talk,” said one fan on X. “Clive, for all his humility with the contestants, thinks he's the dog bo**ocks on Mastermind,” penned a second. A third added: “WTF did I just witness?? get Clive Myrie off this show. He is ruining it,” and “These introductions are below you, Clive.”

The presenter blamed the error on “several administrative issues” and said he would not take part in paid events outside his BBC role, except for some pre-existing commitments.

He wrote on X: “An apology – I’ve had several administrative issues, and I didn’t fill out the correct paperwork for some of my external public events, so they haven’t been published until now.
“I’ve told the BBC I won’t be taking part in any more paid external events in the foreseeable future, beyond a handful of pre-existing commitments, so that this doesn’t happen again. My sincere apologies.”
Myrie is one of the BBC’s best-paid presenters, earning at least £310,000 for his role at BBC News plus an undisclosed sum for hosting Mastermind.
Reports also claim Myrie failed to report nine other engagements, including work as a guest speaker at Suffolk Chamber of Commerce’s Prestige Dinner, as a host at the National Residential Landlords Association’s conference, and as host of an Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association lunch, some of which can bag up to £10k for an appearance.
