Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet - Trailer, Story, Setting, And Everything Else We Know

Naughty Dog's next game

At The Game Awards, Naughty Dog announced a new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and it doesn't bear many similarities to The Last of Us or Uncharted.

The sci-fi game aims to be Naughty Dog's "wildest, most creative story yet," and focuses on the character Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who becomes stranded on a planet called Sempiria. It is Naughty Dog's first new IP in more than a decade.

Not much is known about the PS5 game beyond this, but keep reading on for every morsel of information and news we've come across so far.

As for other games, Naughty Dog has at least one other project in the works now, and many expect it to be The Last of Us: Part III.

When will Intergalactic release?

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet does not have a release date yet, or even a window. Naughty Dog confirmed the game has been in the works since 2020, but it's unknown when, or even if, the game is in full production. Naughty Dog said the game is in development for PS5, but even that doesn't necessarily tell us when the game might be released.

Intergalactic platforms

Naughty Dog has confirmed Intergalactic for PS5. Some of Sony's games come to PC as well, but rarely at launch, so no one should expect that. The PS6 is rumored to be in the works as well, but for now, Naughty Dog has confirmed Intergalactic only for PS5.

Intergalactic story, setting, and characters

Intergalactic is a sci-fi game featuring the character Jordan A. Mun, who is played by Tati Gabrielle. She has a connection to Naughty Dog, as she starred in the Uncharted movie. She's also set to appear in The Last of Us Season 2 as Nora, while she's playing Jade in Mortal Kombat 2.

Mun is a "dangerous bounty hunter" who becomes stranded on the planet Sempiria. This planet has lost communication with the world and "went dark hundreds of years ago." In fact, anyone who’s flown to it hoping to unravel its mysterious past was never heard from again. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit," reads a line from the game's description.

The New York Times reported that Intergalactic takes place in an alternate universe where space travel was "significantly advanced" by 1986. At one point in the trailer, Jordan pops in a CD of the Pet Shop Boys' "Actually" album, which debuted in 1987.

Naughty Dog isn't sharing any further details on Intergalactic's story, apart from promising the game will live up to the "Naughty Dog tradition of creating an emotional, character-driven epic journey."

The developer also teased that Intergalactic will offer the "deepest gameplay" in Naughty Dog history, whatever that means. The studio said Intergalactic will take learnings from Uncharted and The Last of Us and push them "beyond anything we've ever done before."

"Our narrative goals are rivaled only by our gameplay ambitions," Naughty Dog said.

In one sequence in the trailer, we see Jordan fly down to the surface of Sempiria and do battle against some kind of hulking mech robot. She wields some kind of red kinetic sword to fight the beast, but the trailer cuts out before we see any real combat.

The Intergalactic announcement trailer also featured the actor Kumail Nanjiani, and Naughty Dog said it plans to reveal "more of our ensemble down the line." Someone bearing the resemblance to Better Call Saul actor Tony Dalton also showed up in the trailer.

Brand deals?

The Intergalactic trailer featured a number of product placement shots, showing off brands like Sony (which owns Naughty Dog), as well as Adidas and Porsche. Product placement in video games is nothing new, but Naughty Dog has yet to say if it has any bearing on the story.

Who's making Intergalactic?

Naughty Dog, which is best known for the Uncharted and The Last of Us franchises, is developing Intergalactic. As mentioned, it is the company's first new IP in a decade. It's been in development since 2020 and more than 250 people at Naughty Dog alone have worked on it over the years, in addition to external development support. Neil Druckmann is directing.

Intergalactic will be scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails fame.

What about The Last of Us 3?

After Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us Online, the company confirmed it had multiple single-player games in development. One of these is now confirmed to be Intergalactic. The other, many believe, is The Last of Us: Part III. Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann alluded to the possibility of making the game recently, saying, "It does feel like there's probably one more chapter to this story."
