Ange Postecoglou breaks silence on Tottenham infighting and player blow-up: 'wrong way'

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has admitted that Cristian Romero was wrong to go public with his frustration about the Premier League club’s transfer business. Providing a defence of his head coach amid mounting criticism, Romero diagnosed Spurs’ struggles this season as a failure to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window.

Postecoglou has overseen a mixed start to the season with Spurs 11th in the Premier League. Sunday’s 4-3 defeat against Chelsea was met with boos by supporters.

Romero, who is currently injured, is frustrated with the criticism of his colleagues and publicly aimed his hire at the hierarchy. Australian coach Postecoglou insists that while some of the 26-year-old’s comments were true, he should not have revealed his thoughts to the media.

The 59-year-old said: “He was very emotional. He hasn't been able to help us on the pitch. I think that was his way of trying to help. We're going through a tough time and he believes in what we're doing.

“The other part [about the hierarchy], he probably went about it the wrong way. I don't think our challenges at the moment are about one person. I haven't and have never believed that.

“To come through this, that'll only happen if we remain united. Cristian, he realises that lot of what he said was good but some wasn't the right way of dealing with it. The same way I wouldn't criticise a player publicly.

“I've spoken to Cristian about it and he's apologised for it. It wasn't the right way to do it. It shows he cares. There's a way to do it and this wasn't it.”

It comes after Romero appeared to criticise the club’s hierarchy for failing to match the spending of their rivals. He pointed out that Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea strengthen their squads each year.

The defender told Telemundo Deportes: "The truth is, I would say no comment, but...Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn't do well, strengthens again, and now they're seeing results.

“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it.

"The last few years, it's always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it's always the same people responsible.

"Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it's a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year."
