Gavin and Stacey star James Corden "burst into tears" at his birthday thanks to Ruth Jones, he has revealed.

Chatting with The Big Issue, the duo reflected on their "really strong" bond off-screen, a friendship that has spanned over 20 years.

After the third season of the hit BBC show, both ventured into different projects including James taking the helm of The Late Late Show in America, a role he held until 2023.

The emotional reunion occurred at James' 40th birthday bash, organised by his wife in Mexico. James shared: "My wife organised a surprise birthday party for me in Mexico. Lots of my friends walked in with a mariachi band playing.

"Then my wife said there's one more person here. Ruth walked into the room and I just burst into tears. I couldn't believe she was there. It was so special."

James went on to reveal that the Welsh actress sang 'Wild Thing' with the band, saying she was "properly grinding" and it was "so filthy".

The comedian announced in May that Gavin and Stacey would grace television screens once again with a Christmas Day special this year, rekindling the magic that first captured audiences from 2007 to 2010 and again in a 2019 special.

In the previous episode, Vanessa Shanessa "Nessa" Jenkins, played by Ruth Jones, delivered a show-stopping proposal to Neil "Smithy" Smith, portrayed by James Corden.

Speaking about the developments, James revealed that the eagerly awaited 2024 instalment will serve as the "culmination of a 20-year love story".

Before stealing hearts in the cherished sitcom, the dynamic duo shared the screen in Fat Friends.

The 2019 festive special of Gavin and Stacey smashed records, drawing an impressive 11.6 million viewers for its Christmas Day airing, the highest overnight figures seen in 12 years.

But this was just the beginning as numbers soared to monumental heights by 2020, with viewership reaching a stunning 17.1 million and crowning it the most-watched scripted show of the decade.
