Erik ten Hag could be set for frosty Jurgen Klopp showdown if he lands new job

Erik ten Hag has been tipped to return to management at RB Leipzig if the Bundesliga club axe Marco Rose. The former Manchester United manager would find himself working under ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp if he succeeds Rose. And the reunion could be an awkward one following comments Klopp made about the Dutchman at the end of last season.

Ten Hag was given his marching orders by the Red Devils at the end of October after the team had endured a nightmare start to the campaign.

He departed Old Trafford after guiding United to their lowest Premier League finish on record last season as the team finished eighth.

Despite the sorry ending to his reign in Manchester, Ten Hag is said to be on RB Leipzig’s shortlist to replace Rose should the club part ways with their current manager.

RB Leipzig come under the Red Bull GmbH umbrella, with the parent company appointing Klopp as their head of global soccer in the autumn.

The Liverpool hero will have a huge say on all the major issues at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. And Ten Hag would essentially have to answer to him.

Klopp’s Liverpool tenure ended in the opposite manner to Ten Hag’s at United, with the 57-year-old widely lauded after guiding the Merseyside giants to a whole host of trophies including their first Premier League title.

And he couldn’t resist a parting shot at his former rival as he headed through the Anfield exit.

During an event in Liverpool at the end of May, Klopp appeared to reference Ten Hag’s treatment of Jadon Sancho as he told supporters: “If the whole world loses trust and faith in the player, then the manager has to be the one behind the player.

“I cannot just buy into that 'he's useless' stuff - like other clubs did, by the way. Buying a player for £80million and then sending him out on loan.”

United shelled out £72m to take Sancho to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 after he had starred in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund.

But the winger underwhelmed in England and then had a public falling out with Ten Hag after he was dropped for a crucial clash with Arsenal in September 2023.

The 24-year-old was shipped back to Dortmund on a temporary basis in January and was then sent to Chelsea on loan at the start of this campaign. And Klopp clearly felt Ten Hag could have done more to support the player.
