Goo Goo Dolls postpone tour after John Rzeznik hospitalised with pneumonia
Goo Goo Dolls have postponed their South African tour due to frontman John Rzeznik being hospitalised with pneumonia.
The US band had been scheduled to play headline shows in Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria this week. However, the group took to social media today (December 3) to confirm that these had been pushed back to March 2025.
“Weâre heartbroken to postpone our South Africa shows,” the update read, alongside a video message from Rzeznik â who was speaking from a hospital bed. “This country means so much to us, and we were so excited to create more memories with you.”
It added: “Sadly, my doctor has advised rest and recovery.”
In the clip, the lead singer said: “I’m truly sorry that I cannot be there, but I wound up going to the doctor and I have pneumonia, and they checked me into the hospital. I’m stuck here for a day or two.

“But we’re working on getting back down there as fast as we can. And I will keep you informed about that, and I’m just really sorry that we couldn’t do this. I apologise that this happened. We’ll come down and we’ll make it up to you guys.”
Rzeznik went on to thank fans for their patience. You can watch the video in the post above.
Goo Goo Dolls will now play in Cape Town on March 25 before heading to Durban (March 27) and Pretoria (March 29). All tickets for the postponed dates remain valid for the new gigs. Alternatively, ticketholders can request a refund.
Goo Goo Dolls are currently still scheduled to perform at Live Fest 2024 in Naples, Florida next Saturday (December 14). They’ll head out on their US ‘Summer Anthem Tour’ with Dashboard Confessional in 2025.
Per the NHS, pneumonia is “inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection”. It adds: “Most people get better in two to four weeks, but babies, older people, and people with heart or lung conditions are at risk of getting seriously ill and may need treatment in hospital.”
Goo Goo Dolls released their 13th and latest studio album, ‘Chaos In Bloom’, in 2022. Earlier this year, they returned with the single ‘Beautiful Lie’.
Over the summer, Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 hit ‘Iris’ featured on the official soundtrack for Deadpool & Wolverine.
