BBC Mastermind fans say same thing as show becomes 'shadow of its former self'

BBC’s Mastermind, known for its tough questions and intense format, has been ruffling feathers among fans over its recent selection of specialist subjects.

Traditionally, contestants choose an area of expertise and face a rapid-fire round of questions, with points awarded for each correct answer.

But this week’s topics, which range from Narnia and The Matrix films to the fauna of Madagascar and Robbie Williams's solo career, have left viewers unimpressed.

Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration with the perceived decline in the quality of chosen subjects.

One fan mocked: “#Mastermind really is a shadow of its former self. Chosen specialist subject? Pot Noodle Flavours 1982–2008.” Another quipped: “Pick an easy subject.. mine would be ‘Traffic light colours.’”

The inclusion of pop culture topics like The Matrix and Robbie Williams particularly raised eyebrows. “The solo career of Robbie Williams?? Really??? I give up,” wrote one viewer. Another added: “Robbie Williams and Narnia. High-brow stuff tonight.”

For decades, Mastermind has been celebrated for its challenging and obscure specialist subjects, which test contestants’ depth of knowledge.

Over the years, topics have ranged from Norse mythology to quantum mechanics, setting the bar high for intellectual rigor. However, recent episodes have leaned toward more accessible, entertainment-focused subjects, drawing criticism for what some fans see as a shift away from the show’s roots.

const loadOvpScript=()=>{let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=118222&playerApiId=v118222');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)};window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v118222"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript();ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript();ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

Not all viewers were entirely dismissive. Some appreciated the more relatable topics, with one fan tweeting, “Oooh #Mastermind with a specialist subject of Matrix Films. I’m good at this…” Others, however, saw it as a sign of the show losing its edge.

Despite the criticism, Mastermind continues to draw a loyal audience. Hosted by Clive Myrie, the program is still one of the BBC’s flagship quiz shows.

Fans have also slammed the show for is long questions, arguing that it’s provides a disadvantage to the contestants.

Fans dubbed it unfair, blasting: “Just how long were those questions!! Very unfair.”

A second added: “His questions are way longer than the other contestants that seems a bit unfair?” while a third replied: “They go on and on and on; just how long will these questions last for? Very unfair!”

Others even pointed out that some of the questions were “too easy”

“I have to say the general knowledge questions on #MasterMind are way too easy. Im not looking for University Challenge levels but it’s been dumbed down a lot,” blasted one, wit a second echoing: “Haven't watched Mastermind in years but just caught the last couple of minutes of tonight's show. Has it been dumbed down? The questions the last contestant got wouldn't have been out of place on Junior Mastermind.”
