Susanna Reid clapped back as she was accused of giving Alex Norris a hard time as she grilled him on the winter fuel payment cuts.

During Monday's edition of Good Morning Britain, Susanna and her co-host Ed Balls spoke to the Labour MP about the new deadlines that have been put in place for dangerous cladding.

A little later, Susanna, 53, revealed she wanted to broaden their discussion, mentioning the extensive backlash Labour have faced since coming into power.

This was down to their decision to scrap the payment for millions of pensioners and raising inheritance tax for farmers. Shortly after the interview, Susanna and Ed sat down with Guto Harri, the former No 10 Director of Communications and Kevin Maguire.

Referring back to their conversation with the Labour politician, Guto interjected: "You gave him a tough time".

Defending herself, Susanna responded: "Well... I gave him a tough time because we get contacted all the time by people who say, 'How can the government take away money from pensioners but MPs continue to receive energy allowance?'"

When asked for an explanation, Guto said: "Well one wouldn't pay for the other, would it? If you took everything away from MPs, every single penny, it would amount to a little hill of beans compared to the costs and expenses that we're talking about here.

"So it's something the people resent, I understand that, but it's largely irrelevant to the big financial plan."

Things turned heated between Susanna and Norris as she questioned Labour's decision to scrap the winter fuel payment.

Referencing Keir Starmer's recent comments, she said: "This week is going to see a new phase for the government. There's going to be a plan for change for Britain and there are going to be measurable milestones.

"Is this because you've faced so much trouble with farmers over the tax rises and with pensioners over the winter fuel allowance?"

Norris responded: "No, not at all," before the presenter interjected: "You acknowledge you've experienced those problems?"

Before the politician could fully reply, Susanna asked: "Have you not watched the news since you've been in government?"

Norris said: "I would acknowledge that we've inherited an exceptionally difficult situation, particularly with the nation's finances and that's led to difficult decisions."

Shortly after, Susanna asked Norris if he claims support for his energy bills, to which he responded: "I pay my bills for my energy costs at home and like anybody else who works away, my employer meets the costs of working and living away from home."

Susanna questioned whether it would have made more sense to take heating allowance away from MPs, who can earn more than £90,000 per year, later asking: "Shouldn't public money be spent on those who can least afford it?"

Norris revealed that people with the least amount of money have benefited the most from their recent budget, saying: "I completely agree with that and I would say that's what we've done."
