'Lawmakers can get to the next level under one roof'

Lawmakers can start moving into new offices on Saturday, with the renovation works for the first phase of the expansion project at the Legislative Council Complex completed ahead of schedule. Writing on his social media, the council's president, Andrew Leung, said that the early move is a testament to the unity and cooperation of all members and staff involved in the project, adding that lawmakers can finally "get to the next level under one roof". The renovation included the addition of four storeys to accommodate offices for the 20 extra lawmakers who joined Legco as part of electoral reforms in 2021, taking the total from 70 to 90 members. Leung said that the relocation will allow all members currently using the nearby CITIC Tower as a temporary office to return to the complex, while also moving members already in the building to higher levels. He noted that some finishing touches are still needed, such as waterproofing the exterior walls, clean up, and interior design, adding that the Secretariat, together with the Architectural Services Department and contractor, would follow up with the matter. He encouraged lawmakers to share their suggestions for improvements. Looking ahead, Leung said that the second phase of the expansion project would start as soon as possible, including the construction of a new conference room and public education facilities. He said he hopes that all expansion projects will be completed before October of next year.
