New Netflix series 'all fans of The Good Place must watch'

A fresh Netflix series, available for streaming from today is a much watch for The Good Place fans as it will make you laugh and cry just as much.

The show, titled A Man on the Inside, is another brainchild of Mike Schur, who reunites with Ted Danson, one of the stars from his previous creation.

It draws inspiration from the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, which featured an octogenarian infiltrating a Chilean care home to expose potential elder abuse.

Sergio Chamy, the star of the documentary, spent three months undercover in a care home, engaging with residents about their experiences and forming unexpected bonds.

Danson's character is modelled after Sergio, a retiree who, similar to his real-life counterpart, responds to a classified ad to aid a private investigator shortly after losing his wife.

Danson's role in The Good Place seemed custom-made for his talents, and it's no different here. Despite showcasing the same affable charm he first displayed in Cheers over 30 years ago, it hasn't worn thin, reports the Mirror.

While A Man On the Inside shares its creator with The Good Place in Schur, he also contributed as a writer to The Office (and portrayed Cousin Mose), besides creating Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Fans of these shows should not miss this one.

One common thread between two of Schur's most successful creations, Parks and Brooklyn, is that they both revolve around characters who are immensely passionate about their work.

Leslie Knope was a public servant of unwavering dedication, a character the real world would greatly benefit from in our current political climate.

In a similar fashion, Andy Samberg's Detective Jake Peralta openly declared his love for his job in one of the most acclaimed episodes of the show (The Box).

Brooklyn Nine-Nine demonstrated its depth by questioning the role of police in its final season.

A Man on the Inside raises another - should we actively seek out those who despise their jobs to such an extent that they disregard its significance and cause harm to others?

Delving into the answer the series provides at the conclusion of its eight-episode run would spoil the central mystery.

However, the humour is well-paced, and the cast comfortably slips into their roles.

As the sixth episode comes up, the show accomplishes something only the finest prestige television can pull off successfully, leaving me moved to tears.

This episode takes the main storyline and places it on the backburner, instead focusing on the essence of the show.

Following a significant plot twist, key characters find themselves needing to drastically change their current plans, leading them to reflect on their journey thus far.

This episode also gives us a deeper look into Stephanie Beatriz's Didi, revealing that she has been this show's Leslie Knope all along.

The show evoked memories of my late father and posed profound questions that I haven't encountered since watching The Good Place. Much like that show, A Man on the Inside managed to elicit both laughter and tears.

Schur hopes the series will evoke the same emotions he experienced while watching the documentary that inspired it - prompting viewers to reach out to their parents, grandparents, and realise the importance of spending more time with their children. So, ensure your phone is within reach.
