Primus announce global open call to find new drummer
Primus have announced a global open call to search for their new drummer.
READ MORE: Poppy cranks up the heaviness: âSitting amongst the extremes feels very whole to meâThe announcement comes after the band late last month announced the “complete shock” departure of longtime drummer Tim Alexander. Primus wrote on a new social media post: “We are currently taking submissions from all points in the universe for the position of Primus drummer/percussionist.”
They continued: “Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world.
As for what Primus are looking for in their new drummer, they noted: “Flashy chops are wonderful, but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.”
They also included an email address for submissions, which must include their resumé and video of a recent performance.

Following Tim Alexander’s exit from the band, he explained his decision to leave earlier this month: âOver time, I started realizing that it was affecting my physical life, it was affecting my mental life, and it was affecting my family life, and my heart just wasnât in it.â
âWhen I discovered that Iâm struggling with all these things, I had to sit and think about exactly what am I doing,â he continued. âI donât think Iâve ever chosen my path in life, I think Iâve just always thought âIâm a drummer, Iâm just gonna do music,â and things came to me, accepting whatever happens.â
Primus have since confirmed that their annual New Year’s show will proceed as scheduled in an augmented form and will feature members of Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade.
For their upcoming festival date with Tool, dubbed Tool In The Sand, in the Dominican Republic, their one-time touring drummer, Danny Carey, will step in. Next year, the band are set to embark on the second leg of Toolâs Maynard James Keenanâs âSessantaâ tour. For those dates, they wrote previously that they will be âsearching for the âGreatest Drummer on Earth.â
Tool In The Sand, which has been labelled as an âall-inclusiveâ experience, is scheduled to take place on March 7-9 next year in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic across two resorts; the Hard Rock and Royalton resorts. Alongside Primus, bands like Mastodon, Coheed And Cambria, Eagles Of Death Metal, CKY and Kingâs X will be heading to the Dominican Republic for the festival.
Tickets are now on sale via the Tool In The Sand website. You can find more information, including the full lineup, here.
