Storm Toraji expected to come within 200km of HK

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) will consider issuing the T3 storm signal on Wednesday as Severe Tropical Storm Toraji continues to make its way towards Hong Kong, with the system expected to come within 200 kilometres of the territory on Thursday morning. Forecasters say whether a higher warning signal will be needed then depends on Toraji’s intensity and the strength of the winds here. For Tuesday, Toraji is expected to remain too far away to bring any major impact to the city, and the observatory says the Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force for the entire day. But winds are expected to strengthen on Wednesday as Toraji approaches, coupled with the effects of the northeast monsoon, so the observatory will consider issuing the T3 warning during the day on Wednesday. The observatory also warned people to stay away from the shoreline and to avoid water sports for the time being.
