Wynne Evans chats about his performance on Strictly

Strictly Come Dancing's Wynne Evans has revealed an intriguing behind-the-scenes detail from his latest performance.

It comes as the Welsh opera singer, 52, performed a Rumba to This is My Life by Shirley Bassey with dance partner Katya Jones on Saturday night, culminating in a dramatic surprise ending sung by Wynne himself.

Discussing the unforgettable operatic moment on Wednesday's episode of It Takes Two, Wynne admitted: "It was a really strange performance because it's one of those, as an opera singer, you know, you have to try and stay in control as much as you can in order to sing to keep the vocal chords quite relaxed so they can work and in this I was getting too involved sometimes, I was thinking: 'I've just got to keep it calm' because I know I've got to sing at the end."

Janette Manrara, the programme's host, was clearly astonished by his comments, responding with: "Imagine? So thinking of all the Rumba technique and then that as well!"

Saturday's episode was a first for the iconic BBC One series, featuring an icons themed night, where the then remaining 10 pairs took to the floor with routines inspired by music legends, reports the Mirror.

Wynne and his partner Katya paid tribute to Shirley Bassey with their Rumba number, remarkably ending with a live performance by Wynne, surprising the audience and judges alike.

Host Tess Daly was visibly wowed by the performance, exclaiming on the show: "That blew the hair off the back of my arms, that was something, we know Wynne can sing!"

Meanwhile, judge Anton Du Beke showered praise saying: "The best ending to a number I've ever seen in my entire life, unbelievable!"

Amidst the varied feedback from judges, Wynne light-heartedly quipped: "Can we just pretend it's a song contestant instead, is that okay?" He later found out that his performance earned him an impressive 30 points.

Taking to Twitter, now X, Strictly Come Dancing fans were split over the unexpected twist, observing that it is supposed to be a dance contest, not a singing competition. Some comments from viewers included: "It's not the X Factor? #Strictly", "didn't realise I was watching x factor #strictly" and "it's not a singing contest #strictly" while another tweeted: "Someone wants to tell Wynn he doesn't get points for singing!"

Nevertheless, some viewers expressed their admiration, with tweets like: "Really loved Wynne's routine and the powerful and inspiring message it gave, not to mention the amazing vocal finish at the end! He should be really proud! #Strictly" and "Wynne was amazing! #Strictly!"

Strictly Come Dancing continues this Saturday at 6:35pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
