The Martin Lewis Money Show: Advice on pension credit application

Martin Lewis issued an urgent plea to ITV viewers over pension credit as he reacted to Labour's new Budget, calling out the government in the process.

On Wednesday (October 30), Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled a debut budget plan that includes £40 billion ($51.8 billion) worth of tax rises to plug a hole in the public finances.

Ms Reeves also detailed increases to capital gains tax and private school fees, a freeze on fuel duty and the abolition of the controversial “non-dom” tax regime.

Labour's first Budget in 14 years comes after the new government decided to scrap winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners.

Addressing the controversial decision once again, Ms Reeves claimed: "We're protecting the winter fuel payment for the poorest pensioners, those on pension credit."

However, Martin pointed out a major issue with this, telling viewers of The Martin Lewis Money Show: "1.4 million claim pension credit. Around 800,000 people eligible for pension credit don't claim pension credit.

"It's a critically underclaimed benefit. The idea we're protecting the poorest pensioners through pension credit through the 240 question form, with the 800,000 people maybe with onset dementia who do not claim pension credit, we are not protecting 800,000 of them."

The money saving expert continued: "I was expecting some mitigation from that because many people have been lobbying about this. It has not happened.

"I just want to say, because the government aren't doing anything, if you know someone on the state pension, on a very low income, they've lost the cost of living payment, they've lost winter fuel payment, please get them to check if they're eligible for pension credit."

Calling out the Labour government, Martin declared: "More should have been done. It isn't being done. Get them to check, they just have to call up, it doesn't matter if you're not eligible, you can always check."

In a brutal final blow, Martin said: "800,000 of the poorest of our society, who even the government think should be getting the winter fuel payment, will not this winter. We perhaps collectively need to act on it."

Martin called out Ms Reeves for declining to appear on the show, adding: "And the Chancellor. I wish you'd been on to talk to me about it."

Viewers flocked to social media as they said the same thing about the Chancellor's absence, with one writing: "The #Chancellor has declined to appear on Martin Lewis's show. No surprise, he'd have tied her in knots."

Another wrote: "@MartinSLewis doing a cracking job on this show, making the people of this country more and more angry, once again @RachelReevesMP has bottled a tv interview."

Echoing this, a third said: "There’s no wonder No MPs talk to @MartinSLewis on his show, he’d make em feel stupid, the man should be high up in the building of this country, no lies."
