Sunday Brunch hosts speechless after ex-BBC presenter's 'underwear' disaster with Trump

Sunday Brunch: Jon Sopel on 'dirty underwear' disaster with Trump

Former BBC journalist Jon Sopel revealed how he ended up with his dirty laundry on display before meeting Trump.

The political correspondent was the editor of BBC News for North America when the former president was in power.

Because of his role as a journalist, he met Donald Trump a few times.

Today on Sunday Brunch, Jon opened up about how one of those visits went terribly wrong.

He started off by explaining that he was joining Trump on one of his planes alongside 12 other journalists.

While all members of the press had received security clearance to be in the presence of the President, Jon didn't realise there was a special procedure for how their bags would be checked.

He told the Channel 4 chat show hosts: "The 12 of us had to lay out our bags. We'd been travelling for four or five days at this point, and it's not like they're going through the machine.

"They undo your bag and empty the contents. So in front of everybody else, in front of the 12 other journalists - my dirty clothes, underwear, socks are all being laid out and there's a sniffer dog combing over my clothes.

"I was thinking, this is all getting slightly humiliating!"

All the other guests on Sunday Brunch were left in fits of laughter after hearing the anecdote.

Meanwhile, hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer looked taken aback as Jon recalled the "humiliating" moment.

The broadcaster left the BBC in 2022, and now hosts a daily podcast called The News Agents instead.

Sunday Brunch airs every Sunday on Channel 4 at 9.30am
