Philadelphia Union's goalkeeper Holden Trent has tragically passed away at the age of 25, the club confirmed. The MLS team released a heartfelt statement on their website this Saturday, announcing the sad news but did not disclose the cause of death.

"The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better," the message read.

"He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends.

After being picked as the No. 28 overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, Trent spent two seasons with Philadelphia and played in six matches for the team's MLS Next Pro affiliate - Philadelphia Union II.

The Greensboro, North Carolina native last graced the pitch against New York Red Bulls II back in June, where he made two saves but conceded four goals. During the 2023 campaign, Trent made five starts for Union II in league play, amassing 20 saves and registering a 62.5 save percentage while conceding 12 goals.

Trent began his journey at West Virginia University before finding a lasting place at High Point University, where he played for three seasons. As team captain, he ended his university career ranked sixth among active NCAA Division I goalkeepers for shutouts (22) in the fewest games played (52). His efforts were instrumental in leading the Panthers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory - a 2-0 triumph over UNC.
