Customs seize smuggled goods worth HK$100m

Customs officers on Friday said they seized smuggled goods with a market value of over HK$100 million during an operation last week. They inspected a 40-foot container scheduled to set sail to Taichung, confiscating products including electronic appliances, routers, CPUs, computers and circuit boards. No arrests have been made so far. Shirley Woo, an investigator of Customs' syndicate crimes investigation bureau, said it's believed the intended final destination for the goods was the mainland. “We believe that, given the huge demand for these smuggled products on the mainland, criminals are taking an indirect route to first smuggle the cargo to Taichung, and then use various means to smuggle it back to the mainland,” she said. Woo added that more than HK$10 million in taxes would have been evaded if the smuggling had been successful.
