Sofiane Diop had to be covered up on the pitch midway through Nice's Europa League clash with Hungarian side Ferencvaros on Thursday night.

Diop suffered a nasty head injury during Nice's 1-0 defeat in Budapest, with privacy screens put up around the player while the medical team got to work.

An eerie silence fell on the typically rowdy Groupama Arena during the stoppage, which had been caused by a clash of heads between Diop and one of his Nice team-mates.

The lengthy first-half stoppage eventually ended with Diop returning from behind the cover bandaged up and remarkably able to play on.

But his involvement in the contest wouldn't last long, as the 24-year-old was hooked at half-time by manager Frank Haise.

The French side were unable to find an equaliser though, with Moise Bombito's first-half own-goal proving the difference between the two sides.

Pablo Rosario had seen red for Nice in the dying embers of the game, rounding off a truly miserable outing for the Ligue 1 outfit.

Commenting after the match on his team's performance, manager Haise said: "If I wasn't worried about that I wouldn't be aware. We weren't there in terms of the determination and it showed in the result."

Nice remain winless after their first three Europa League outings, having previously drawn to Real Sociedad and lost to Lazio.

Elsewhere in the Europa League, Manchester United are also without a win in this year's competition, despite having once again taken the lead.

The Red Devils opened the scoring against Fenerbahce midway through the first half, but Christian Eriksen's strike was cancelled out in the second period when Youssef En-Nesyri hit back for the hosts.

The contest wasn't without drama, though. A typically bullish Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands after complaining about a referee decision.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the Special One said: "The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fenerbahce is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition.

"So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go. I don’t want to speak any more about it. I want to speak about the game."

Whereas Tottenham maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition with a 1-0 victory over AZ and goals from Vaclav Cerny, Tom Lawrence and Hamza Igamane helped Rangers to a thumping 4-0 victory over FCSB.
