Howard Webb hilariously hit back at Roy Keane with a Manchester United dig that left Gary Neville in stitches.

Webb was appearing on The Overlap podcast with ex-United trio Neville, Keane and Wayne Rooney, alongside Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

But it was a question from producer Kiaran Saunders that got the cogs whirring among the panel.

The self-proclaimed Liverpool superfan quizzed Webb on how VAR can be improved for the match-going fan.

Webb’s first response was to highlight the difficulty of conveying what goes on at Stockley Park at traditional English stadiums like Kiaran’s beloved Anfield, where digital screens are non-existent.

Webb said: “I absolutely agree it needs to be better, in terms of sharing information with the fans.

“It’s a bit complicated in some places if you’re going to use the video board, because at your place [Anfield] you don’t have a board for example.”

Sensing an opportunity to get one up on United’s long-time rivals, Keane sarcastically chirped back with: “Small clubs isn’t it?”

But Webb, who officiated for over a decade in England’s top flight, quickly responded: “Man U hasn’t got one either.”

Keane, seemingly stunned by the revelation that Old Trafford doesn’t have a jumbo screen to replay VAR decisions on, was wide-mouthed by Webb’s comments.

Unsurprisingly though, the rest of the panel, including a now-vindicated Kiaran, took plenty of joy in Webb’s witty remark.

Neville in particular, was left in stitches after seeing his old chum be left red-faced.

The discussion with Webb focused on officiating in the Premier League and how it can be improved, with Keane serving up a suggestion of his own.

Unhappy that every decision in a match is checked and verified by VAR, the former Ireland international said: "Basically, one [challenge] per half for each coach or each captain... you maybe give them five seconds or 10 seconds to sort of give a signal [to the referee]... so you're no re-reffing the whole game, you've just got a challenge each half."

Webb was quick to take the suggestion on board, before revealing it’s something already being trialled around the world.

The 53-year-old commented: "We'd only really know [if it would work] if we see it in practice. Interestingly enough, at the moment there's the U-17s Women's World Cup, and we've just finished the U-20s Women's World Cup in Colombia.

“They're using this on trial. So each coach has two challenges a game."
