Emmerdale is one of the most iconic fictional villages in the UK, with the soap being on screens for more than 50 years. Home to legendary families such as the Dingles, the Sugdens and the Hopes, the setting of the Dales is picturesque as it's set in the heart of Yorkshire.

Many die hard fans may find themselves wondering what actually goes on at the set of Emmerdale, with hopes of seeing what it's really like behind the camera. Luckily, the set is open to the public as, since 2015, tours have operated of the private village set in Harewood.

However, it should also be noted that a few areas are off limits – including Pollard’s Barn, Wishing Well Cottage and Holdgate Farm – as these buildings belong to the estate, not ITV.

When visiting the Emmerdale Experience, our very knowledgable tour guide Serena explained to Express.co.uk that when Emmerdale use these sets, they need to pay extra fees to the estate owners, and would have to pay even more if they had fans visiting the buildings.

The soap's exterior scenes are primarily shot on a purpose-built set located on Harewood House Estate in West Yorkshire. The land has a secret link to the hierachy as it is owned by extended members of the Royal Family - The Lascelles family - and is home to David Lascelles, the eighth Earl.

Meanwhile, most interior scenes are mostly filmed at The Leeds Studios, on Kirkstall Road in the city centre. But there are a few exceptions to the rule with scenes filmed inside of the church, veterinary practice or the B&B all being located with the external sets, inside of their respective external counterparts.

In 1998, a replica of the village was constructed on the estate. Before this, the West Yorkshire village of Esholt was used but it was causing quite the stir for local residents, who were inundated with tourists and the soap was struggling to keep spoilers under wraps.

While everything has been contructed deliberately for the purpose of filming the much-loved ITV soap, the set designers thought of everything to keep it looking as genuine as possible.

Serena explained that the buildings on the Emmerdale set were once verily cleverly sprayed with horse manure and yoghurt in a bid to draw bugs to the area.

Doing this meant that the bugs would eat away at the facades, giving them an instant worn look, making the set appear more realistic and authentic.

But of course the disgusting mixture had other impacts on the ITV soap's set as the tour guide explained: "As you can imagine, it was very stinky for a while."

She went on to explain that sledgehammers had been taken to the stones to make them appear older and roofs on the set were deliberately designed with a bow in them for the same reason.
