ITV Emmerdale fans 'rumble' reason Zak Dingle left letter for Lydia in love child twist

Emmerdale's Lisa Riley talks about Zak Dingle memorial episode

Emmerdale enthusiasts are on edge after piecing together why Zak Dingle handed a letter to Lydia following his screen departure.

The Yorkshire soap paid tribute this week to the character Zak Dingle (played by Steve Halliwell) after his off-screen passing. Tragically, the real-life Steve passed away in December last year at 77 years old.

Scriptwriters crafted a poignant exit for Zak, revealing his death and shaking the entire Dingle family to its core with grief.

Living in Scotland at the time, Zak's death prompted Cain (portrayed by Jeff Hordley) and Sam (James Hooton) to make the journey to repatriate his body to the renowned village. The sombre return saw the Dingles gather at Wishing Well Cottage to mourn their loss together.

In the midst of sorrow, Cain disclosed that Zak had penned a letter specifically for Lydia (Karen Blick), his son's wife. Lydia chose to keep the contents private, sparking curiosity from Zak's daughter Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and causing a stir among the viewers, reports Leeds Live.

Yet fans are theorising a dramatic twist could be in play. There's buzzing speculation around Zak having another child, with some suspecting that it might even be Lydia, particularly given the letter addressed to her.

Lydia, appearing on Emmerdale since 2016 and becoming Sam Dingle's bride in 2020, was warmly incorporated into the Dingle dynasty. An intrigued fan remarked on an Emmerdale Facebook group: "I don't understand why Lydia got a letter but Belle didn't?"

There's buzz among Emmerdale fans about the storyline twists, with one viewer suggesting: "Love child maybe."

Another wrote warily: "I really hope not," accompanied by a trail of queasy emojis. Yet another speculated: "A love child that's already in the program comes to light and Belle is shocked."

Zak Dingle's departure from Emmerdale is imminent, with sombre scenes scheduled this week. Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain in the soap, graced ITV's Lorraine on Wednesday (October 16) to give viewers a teaser.

Reflecting on filming the funeral scenes, he shared: "It was poignant and really well written. A tribute to a dear friend Steve. We did have some laughs as well. He liked to joke on set, so as much as it was poignant when the cameras were rolling, we were telling stories of Steve throughout the week we shot it."

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
