Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley had to intervene swiftly as the popular morning programme encountered significant live technical hitches.

On Thursday's broadcast of ITV's breakfast programme, Richard, 68, alongside co-anchor Kate Garraway, 57, returned to grace our screens whilst navigating through the day's hot topics.

Yet, pandemonium struck when they lost audio during an on-air interview with Emmerdale staple Marlon Dingle, played by actor Mark Charnock.

Mark tuned in to chat about the iconic soap family the Dingles, who are marking their anniversary on the show.

The introduction went awry as technical glitches silenced the conversation just as they were cueing in the guest, leaving Mark nonplussed and staring into the camera, reports the Mirror.

Initiating the dialogue, Richard noted: "Mark joins us from the Emmerdale set" and pursued with the enquiry: "Mark I've got to ask over the years, do you feel more like a Charnock or more of a Dingle?"

With silence ensuing, a perplexed Richard queried, "Hello Mark are you able to hear us over there on Emmerdale?"

Kate observed the mishap, remarking: "I don't think he can hear us. I thought he was taking a very long time to think about the question."

To which Richard intervened, proposing: "Should we try again? Let's try again."

Mark finally received an operational microphone and the interview could proceed anew. Kate offered an apology for the live gaffe, stating: "Sorry about that."

Richard echoed her sentiment, adding: "Yes sorry about that." Richard then revisited his former question, with Mark confessing: "After all these years the lines become blurred."

The actor, who has graced the soap for 28 years, confessed: "I've started answering Marlon in the streets because you get so much of that in the streets and you do start responding to your name and fictional name. It's very strange."

Richard queried: "So does that mean that the character traits have become part of your real life?"

"Not just a little bit," Mark asserted. "I think the sense of humour has come together and I sometimes can hear myself thinking 'hang on am I making social conversation or is this Marlon's dialogue'."

Discussing the Dingles' popularity with Emmerdale fans, Mark acknowledged that upon his arrival to the show he was clueless about their significance but soon grasped that they are a 'big deal'.

Reflecting on his beginnings on the soap, he began: " I got the job on my 28th birthday. I remember getting the audition but I was disengaged with the show and I hadn't watched it for a few years so I didn't know who the Dingles were."

He elaborated: "People would ask who I was playing and I would say 'this character Marlon Dingle' and they would be like 'what' so then I suddenly realised how much of a big deal they were and they were one of the main reasons people watched the soap."

Good Morning Britain is on ITV1 weekdays at 6am and on ITVX
