BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has told listeners that he's treated like "a King" by his wife Tess Daly and their daughters when he's unwell, but was often "shouted at" for not returning the same caring response.

On Tuesday's show, the 50-year-old broadcaster cheerfully declared to co-host Richie Anderson that he was nearly at the end of an illness that had been dragging on for weeks.

Quizzed on whether or not he had received sympathy at home, he replied: "I've got to say that when I am poorly, they treat me like a King my girls, they really do."

Vernon then chuckled about how this care is one-sided at times, adding: "Sometimes I get shouted at because it's not reciprocated, I think is the right word.

Vernon has frequently given listeners an insight into his family life since joining BBC Radio 2 last year.

During a recent episode, Vernon was hailed "a lucky man" by his BBC co-star Zoe Ball, as he shared how he gets up in the morning.

He quipped: "I have Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly roll over and go, 'It's time to get up', with a dig of the elbow, 'Come on, get up'."

Zoe responded: "Oh, you're a lucky man! Living the dream Vernon Kay, honestly."

Vernon and Tess, who exchanged vows in Horwich back in 2003, celebrated two decades of marriage last year.

When asked about the secret behind their long-lasting relationship, the Strictly presenter revealed that life with Vernon was still full of excitement.

She gushed in an Instagram Q&A: "We still sit down for dinner and have so much to talk about, we still have a real laugh. I see when his name comes up on his phone, I'm like 'yay'."

Tess added: "We have a good laugh, he's always messing about, dancing and singing in the kitchen. [There's] never a dull moment."
