Bristol City boss Liam Manning takes leave of absence following death of newborn son

Bristol City have confirmed that Liam Manning will take a leave of absence following the tragic passing of his newborn son, Theo John.

Manning, known for his high possession and high pressing style of football, has been at the helm at Ashton Gate since November 2023, having previously managed MK Dons and Oxford United.

His assistant Chris Hogg, who he brought with him from Oxford, will temporarily take over the Championship side. The club expressed their condolences to Manning in a statement, urging respect for his privacy during this difficult time.

"Everyone at Bristol City Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Liam's recently born son Theo John Manning," the club said.

"We know that Bristol City's supporters and the wider football family will share their condolences and deepest sympathy with Liam, his wife Fran and his son Isaac during this difficult period.

"Liam will take a period of absence, and all football duties will be carried out by Chris Hogg. We ask that the privacy of Liam and his family is respected during this time."

Currently, the Robins are positioned 16th in the Championship, with two wins, five draws, and two losses from their first nine games of the season. Their next match is on Saturday when they face Middlesbrough away.

The football community has rallied around Manning in a show of solidarity. Plymouth Argyle expressed their support, stating: "Sending our love to Liam and his family at this terribly sad time."

Norwich City also extended their sympathies: "The thoughts of everyone at Norwich City are with Liam and his family at this time."

West Bromwich Albion said: "The thoughts of everyone at West Bromwich Albion are with the Manning family at this tragic time."

If Hogg takes charge at the Riverside on Saturday, it will mark his debut as head coach of a senior team, following his experience with academy and Under-23 squads at Ipswich Town and Newcastle United.
