Liverpool ace Dominik Szoboszlai was left red-faced during Hungary’s Nations League draw with the Netherlands after he forgot a basic rule while taking a goal kick.

Hungary, who crashed out at the group stage during the summer’s European Championship, held the competition’s semi-finalists to a 1-1 draw in Budapest on Friday night.

The hosts took the lead midway through the first half when Roland Sallai tucked home at the back post before Denzel Dumfries levelled things up in the second half.

That came after the Dutch were reduced to 10 men, with Virgil Van Dijk sent off for a second bookable offence after hooking down Hungary’s Kevin Csoboth.

But it was the actions of his Liverpool team-mate Szoboszlai’s bizarre attempt that caught the eye the most, with the midfielder even earning himself a talking to from the referee.

It came during the first half of the contest when Hungarian goalkeeper Denes Dibusz placed the ball on the six-yard-box line, with Szoboszlai rather confusingly starting to dribble away with the ball.

The Dutch players were understandably puzzled, with referee Lukas Fahndrich quickly calling a halt to proceedings in the Puskas Arena.

That’s because the IFAB laws of the game state the player who takes the goal kick mustn’t take more than one touch before the ball comes into contact with another player.

As a result, an indirect free-kick was awarded to the Netherlands with the Hungary players full of questions after their captain’s strange stunt.

Szoboszlai’s blushes were spared though when the Dutch failed to score off their in-direct free-kick from 10 yards out.

It comes after a mixed start to life under new Reds boss Arne Slot, who despite starting him in all but one Premier League fixture this season, continues to demand more from the 23-year-old.

Commenting last month, Slot said: “He has been important for us. He has been outstanding in his pressing game. Something that we have to work on with him is scoring goals and creating chances.

"His numbers need to go up but I am really happy with him and I’m sure his numbers will go up.”

Irrespective of the gaffe that nearly cost his side a goal, Szoboszlai is expected to feature in Hungary’s second game of the international break against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday.

Following that, it’s a return to club action with Liverpool, who face Chelsea at Anfield in their first game back.
