Five HK universities make list of world's top 100

Five universities in Hong Kong have again made it into a ranking of the world's top 100 institutions by Britain's Times Higher Education magazine. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) comes in at number 35, unchanged from last year, while Chinese University (CUHK) jumps nine spots to 44, its highest ranking ever. The University of Science and Technology is ranked 66th, down from 64th last year. City University (CityU) is in 80th place, up from 82 last year, and Polytechnic University takes the 84th spot, up from 87. Responding to its result, HKU said it consistently provides students with top-notch education and is committed to being a world-class university in Asia. Meanwhile, CUHK head Rocky Tuan said his institution is proud to have risen up the rankings, noting that it has secured government funds for seven research projects – more than any other local university. "[Our highest-ever ranking reflected] the dedication and excellence of every member within the CUHK community, particularly in research and knowledge transfer," Tuan said in a statement. CityU achieved a perfect score of 100 for industry – an indicator for income and patents. "As a young university, CityU has seen robust development in recent years, gaining recognition both locally and internationally," its president, Freddy Boey, said in a statement. The University of Oxford tops the chart for the ninth year in a row. In 12th place, Tsinghua University is the highest in Asia, followed by Peking University in 13th place. The Times ranking covers nearly 2,100 universities from 115 countries and regions around the world.
