Hero dog leads cops to her injured owner in a cabin in the woods

A rescue dog has been deemed a hero for leading a cop to her elderly owner who was injured at a cabin in the woods.

Gita, 13, was sitting on a roadway when Deputy Wright spotted her, according to the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy tried to get Gita into his vehicle to find her owner, but she refused. Wright then checked the area and homes in Stevens County, Washington, within a mile of the dog for her owner, who was nowhere to be found.

‘Sensing something amiss, Wright went back to the dog which was now laying on the centerline,’ wrote the sheriff’s office on Facebook last Tuesday.

When Wright attempted to get Gita off the road, the dog went toward an unmarked roadway that was less traveled.

The deputy followed Gita to a small summer cabin.

‘He began checking around the area and observed an elderly male laying on the ground calling for help a short distance from the cabin,’ stated the sheriff’s office.

The man, 84, was Gita’s owner. He had hurt his leg from a fall and had other medical conditions that required him to take medication. He had been laying there for hours on September 25 and could have had an emergency if not discovered.

Gita was the ‘best friend of the gentleman in trouble’, according to the sheriff’s department.

‘We credit Gita for saving his life that day,’ the department wrote. ‘The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us.’

The department also thanked Wright ‘for going to the extra effort and thank you Gita for being a good girl and true hero!’

One photo shared on Facebook showed Gita, a spotted white dog, standing in the middle of the roadway. Another picture showed her standing inside a vehicle with a red leash.

Gita is not the only dog that has helped save its owner.

In April 2021, a pit bull named Astro barked and ran around at a neighbor, leading the Good Samaritan to his owner who was having a medical emergency at a Texas home.
