Police Officer suspended after sexual harassment conviction
A police officer found guilty of sexually harassing a female nurse has been suspended from duty, according to an announcement by the Office of the Secretary for Security.
The incident occurred on May 18, 2022, when the off-duty officer visited Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre due to a head injury. While awaiting treatment, he allegedly sexually harassed a nurse, prompting her to call the police.
The case was investigated by the Public Security Police Force (PSP) last year in June, and the police officer was later charged and convicted of sexual harassment by the criminal court of the Court of First Instance. He was sentenced to four months in prison with two years of probation.
The defendant appealed the decision, but the Court of Second Instance dismissed the appeal and affirmed the judgment on June 11 this year. Based on the instruction by the Secretary for Security on Sept. 24, the police officer has now been suspended from his duties.
The Office of the Secretary for Security stressed that PSP “would never tolerate any violation of law by any police officers,” and that anyone who violates the law will have to face the consequences.
