Netflix cancels beloved comedy after just two seasons as fans rage over 'cliffhanger'
Netflix subscribers have been left disappointed once again as another highly-rated series has been axed after just two seasons.
Adding insult to injury, this follow-up to a cherished 1990s sitcom wrapped up its latest chapter with a tantalising cliffhanger and countless unresolved plotlines.
The successor to the hugely successful That 70s Show, which starred Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, will not be seeing a third season of That 90s Show anytime soon.
Featuring returning cast members Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith as Kitty and Red Forman, the series centres on their granddaughter Leia (played by Callie Haverda), who forms new friendships during her summer stay with her grandparents in 1995.
Released in two parts in June and August 2024, the second season left Leia's future hanging in the balance after she chose to remain with Kitty and Red in Point Place for the academic year.

Meanwhile, Leia's relationship with Jay Kelso (Mace Coronel) was also left unstable after Jay lied about nicking Kitty's keys to host a rooftop school party, suggesting a potential breakup in the now-axed Part Four. Fans of That 90s Show have since expressed their frustration on social media, particularly given the numerous unresolved narratives.
Viewers were left seething as one irate fan took to X (formerly Twitter), venting their fury: "What the hell?!!!" and lamenting, "Noooooo, at least give the series a proper ending please!", reports the Mirror.
Another was just as vocal, saying: "Well this sucks! I loved this show, fingers crossed someone picks it up and we get season 3. You can't leave us on a cliffhanger like that!"
A different annoyed subscriber questioned the streaming giant directly with: "WTF @Netflix - why do you keep canceling awesome shows?
Red and Kitty returned for more antics in the 1990s (Image: NETFLIX)"Imagine if every show was canceled after two seasons just because it's not getting the numbers you expect. Give a show a chance, especially this one!"
Reddit users also chimed in, with fans asserting the series had begun to hit its stride with Part Three following a shaky initiation.
Expressing a mix of regret and optimism, one Redditor commented: "I'm actually kind of disappointed," and opined further: "Part 2 was weak but Part 3 was their best and it felt like they'd finally found their footing."
Criticism of the show's format was also evident as another pointed out: "Just another reason why the whole 10 episodes (max) a season for a sitcom does not work at all."

The future of Leia and Jay's relationship may remain a mystery (Image: NETFLIX)However, some Reddit denizens wondered if the axe might have been merciful, such as the user who contended: "The nostalgia wore off after like 2 episodes.
"It just wasn't as funny. The cast also lacked the original's chemistry."
As uncertainty shrouds Leia's fate in Point Place, enthusiasts hold onto a sliver of hope that a third season might be picked up by an alternative platform, should there be sufficient clamour from the fanbase.
That 90s Show is available to stream on Netflix.
