BBC News viewers have all made a demand for Victoria Derbyshire to step in after one of her colleagues admitted to making a colossal error. BBC political news heavyweight Laura Kuenssberg admitted that she was forced to cancel on a much-anticipated TV interview with Boris Johnson after she made an embarrassing mistake.

She revealed she inadvertently sent the former Prime Minister briefing notes meant for her own team ahead of the interview. Expressing her regret on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Laura wrote: "While prepping to interview Boris Johnson tomorrow, by mistake I sent our briefing notes to him in a message meant for my team.

"That obviously means it's not right for the interview to go ahead. It's very frustrating, and there's no point pretending it's anything other than embarrassing and disappointing, as there are plenty of important questions to be asked.

"But red faces aside, honesty is the best policy. See you on Sunday."

A BBC spokesperson confirmed the news, as they said: “Tomorrow’s interview with Boris Johnson won’t be going ahead. As Laura has explained, interview briefing notes meant for colleagues were inadvertently shared with him.

“This makes an interview tomorrow untenable. Under the circumstances, both the BBC and Mr Johnson’s team have agreed this is the best way forward.”

Despite the presenter's honesty, fans made calls for her to be replaced on the BBC news show with one woman in mind - Victoria Derbyshire.

Posting to X, one user quizzed: "How, do you accidentally send an email intended for multiple members of your team, to the sole email address of your intended interviewee... and, why didn't you simply ask @vicderbyshire to step in (with her questions)?"

Another added: "You sent him the briefing notes ‘by mistake’?! That is quite the clanger! Someone give Victoria Derbyshire a call, she’ll do it!"

A third suggested: "Why not Victoria Derbyshire as replacement? @vicderbyshire. Maybe James O'Brien might come out of BBC 'retirement' @mrjamesob for one night only?"

Someone else penned: "Victoria Derbyshire is a more competent interviewer, give her the job permanently and stand aside," with another posting: "Not a mistake Victoria Derbyshire would make, who should in many peoples opinion be conducting the interview in the first place."

The interview was to promote Mr Johnson’s new memoir, Unleashed.
