Manchester United's medical team are optimistic about Tyrell Malacia's recovery from a long-term injury, with hopes that he could rejoin the matchday squad in the coming months.

Malacia last featured in a competitive match for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League in June of the previous year, but underwent knee surgery just a month later.

Unfortunately, the operation did not go as planned and Malacia had to have another procedure on his knee, which resulted in him missing the entire 2023/24 season for United.

Despite the setbacks, it is understood that Malacia is now closer than ever to making a return to action, with club staff buoyed by his recent progress.

The Dutchman has been participating in warm-up exercises during training sessions at Carrington, and insiders believe the quick movements in these drills will aid his rehabilitation.

In recent weeks, while the main group prepared for matches, Malacia continued his individual programme and even took part in a small-sided game on Wednesday.

However, despite Malacia's positive progress, United will continue to exercise caution with his recovery, easing him back into full-intensity training. Insiders admit they must be realistic about when he will be deemed fit enough to play in a competitive match again.

After a 16-month hiatus from the pitch, Malacia is expected to be somewhat rusty upon his return and will need to demonstrate that he's up to United's standards once he regains full fitness.

The Dutch defender could potentially make his comeback during the winter months of November and December, but it's unlikely he'll be immediately placed in the starting line-up, given the shortage of cover at left-back.

With Malacia's contract set to expire in the summer of 2026, this means he'll be entering the final year of his contract at the end of the season, putting him in a position where he'll have to fight for his future at United.

Having faced both mental and physical challenges during his extended absence, the defender is eager to prove his worth to the team upon his return.
