Typhoon Krathon weakens and slows, but expected to bring heavy rain for next 3 days

Typhoon Krathon weakened slightly overnight, and forecasts have revised time of landfall in southwestern Taiwan to late tonight, Wednesday, or early tomorrow, Thursday.

As of 9:00 am, Krathon was located 160 kilometers southwest of Kaohsiung City, moving north-northeast at 10 kilometers per hour.

Typhoon Krathon weakened from a severe to a moderate typhoon as it hovered southwest of the port city of Kaohsiung, sucking in a stream of cool, dry air flowing southward over the Taiwan Strait,

While the reduction of intensity is good news, the slow movement of the typhoon will significantly increase the length of time its impact is felt in all areas of Taiwan.

The Central Weather Administration revised Krathon’s potential track area, predicting the storm to track northwards along Taiwan’s western plains towards the capital city of Taipei over a period of three days. After landing, the storm will further weaken into a tropical depression, bringing heavy rain to the whole of Taiwan.

CWA issued heavy rain warnings covering much of Taiwan’s main island this morning, including an extremely torrential rain warning for Taitung County and parts of Pingtung County, a torrential rain warning for mountain areas of Hualien County, extremely heavy rain for the southern half of Yilan County, coastal Hualien, Kaohsiung City, Tainan City, and mountain areas of Chiayi County, and heavy rain in Chiayi City, coastal Chiayi, Changhua, mountain areas of Hsinchu County, mountain areas of Taoyuan City, New Taipei City, Keelung City, and northern Yilan County.
