Japanese and Italian Influences Collide in Shigeaki Asahara's new Reading Lamp

Milanese brand Stilnovo has enlisted Japanese designer Shigeaki Asahara to create a new reading lamp, naming it "Torino".

Launching today, the design of the lamp is described as being reflective of its "creator's history" – Asahara was born in Japan, but since the beginnings of his career has split his time between Italy and his home country.

"Torino", which translates Turin, brings together the design characteristics and signatures he has experienced in both places. From a technical standpoint, he looked to Japan, while when it came to aesthetics, he took inspiration from the historical architecture of Turin, especially the Piazza Vittorio Veneto. "Here, streets are orthogonal to each other, with simple lines and austere decorations," Asahara says.

Despite its simple form, options have been a key component to Torino's design. The lamp is made up of an articulated arm and a rotatable head, meaning that its positioning is flexible; its light is dimmable; it sits upon either a solid base, a clamp, or a wall-mounted bracket; and it is available in six finishes.

"Stilnovo was finally the bridge that combined my aesthetic and technical history and allowed Turin to come to light," adds Asahara, talking about the collaboration.
