Beijing celebrates PRC's founding, travel rush begins

A flag-raising ceremony was held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Tuesday morning, marking the 75th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Spectators gathered to witness the ceremony at the square, where the national anthem was played and the national flag was raised. The day also kicked off a seven-day golden week holiday, with China's railway network expected to handle 175 million passenger trips for the period, according to the national railway operator China State Railway Group. Over 21 million trips are expected for Tuesday alone. "In response to the surge in passenger demand, measures will be taken to boost transportation capacity, enhance services, and ensure safe, orderly and enjoyable trips", the group said. Meanwhile, Beijing Daxing International Airport is expected to handle more than 6,400 flights and more than 1.03 million passengers, during the holiday period, according to officials. Chengdu, Shanghai and Guangzhou were the top domestic destinations for passengers from Beijing, while popular international spots included Tokyo and Singapore. (Additional reporting by Xinhua)
