BBC News presenter quits after 28 years to become fitness instructor
BBC News stalwart Rebecca Jones has made the leap to leave the broadcasting giant after an impressive 28-year career to focus on her health and find happiness in a markedly different vocation far from the glow of studio lights.
She became a well-known presence on the BBC, taking a leading role during significant news events in recent times.
Her portfolio includes pivotal reports concerning conflicts like the Ukraine war, and she was on air for grave incidents such as the harrowing London Bridge terror attack, not to mention guiding viewers through the sad announcement of the late Queen's passing.
August 2023 marked the end of an era as Rebecca waved goodbye to the BBC without regrets, despite absorbing a substantial financial blow due to her shift in careers. A health scare in 2021 that led to emergency hospital visits with severe pain and dizzying spells while on duty prompted her to review her life's path.
Doctors identified burnout as the core issue and recommended a month-long break from her responsibilities as an Art Correspondent and newsreader at the BBC. Speaking with The Times, Rebecca disclosed: "I also come from a generation of women who felt that to survive in the workplace you needed to plough on and deliver."
She added: "But I recognised I was at a turning point. It gradually dawned on me that things had to change, not only for my health, but also for my happiness.", reports the Daily Star.

She has been vocal about its benefits for her mental and physical health amidst the newsroom's frenzy, telling the Mirror: "Undoubtedly it helped my sanity and stamina while I was working in the hectic environment of the newsroom."

Rebecca has spoken about the profound impact this shift has had on her life, revealing: "I'm no longer at the beck and call of the news desk and I am in control of what I do. I sleep better, there are no more heart palpitations and after years in pain, my stiff neck and frozen shoulder have disappeared."
In a delightful turn of events, Hollywood icon Tom Hanks, whom Rebecca encountered during a BBC Radio 4 interview and later at his book event in Liverpool, became one of her earliest supporters.
Rebecca shared that Hanks wrote in a signed copy of his book: "Good luck on that new adventure. Closer and closer to your status as a creature of a renaissance."
