Fans have expressed their apprehension after Sky and HBO unveiled a fresh glimpse of the new series of The Last of Us.

The show's Season 2, based on the popular video game franchise, resumes five years after the events of the first series, mirroring the time gap between the first and second game.

Joel and Ellie's history comes back to haunt them, pulling them into disputes with each other and new adversaries, immersing them deeper into a world more perilous than they ever anticipated.

They may also encounter additional types of infected along the way.

Fans have lauded the new teaser for its faithful recreation of pivotal moments from the highly praised sequel of the game, including one traumatic moments than players of the video games are still recovering from.

The Last of Us Part II, the eagerly awaited sequel to the PS3 original, was launched in June 2020 for the PlayStation 4. It was developed exclusively for Sony's consoles by Naughty Dog. Both games were remastered and released on the current generation PlayStation 5 in 2022 and 2024 respectively.

The first series of the HBO adaptation deviated only slightly from the source material, with the most significant change being the well-received episode featuring Bill and Frank. It appears that Season 2 will also adhere closely to the original narrative, leading many fans to admit they're unsure if they're prepared, reports the Mirror.

Social media was abuzz after the teaser was released yesterday (September 26). One fan said on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Fantastic trailer. I'm so ready for S2 but also not ready at the same time." Echoing the sentiment, another shared: "I'm ready but also not really."

A particular viewer tweeted a screengrab from the trailer, believed to be crucial in both this preview and the entire series, depicting Bella Ramsey's Ellie in a state of intense emotion. Accompanying the image, they commented: "This is THE scene isn't it...."

Someone else chimed in with a word of caution for the uninitiated: "I don't think no body will be ready for the *** scene. The real ones know."

The trailer features familiar faces, including Ramsey reprising her role as Ellie and Pedro Pascal as Joel, alongside Gabriel Luna returning as Joel's brother Tommy and Rutina Wesley as his partner Maria. New characters are set to appear too, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Jeffrey Wright filling the shoes of Isaac.

Fans also spotted Catherine O'Hara, sparking theories about her playing a role not seen in the game, although her character has yet to be confirmed.

Craig Mazin, celebrated for his work on Chernobyl, comes back as writer and executive producer. Joining him again is Neil Druckmann, the original game's director, taking up similar responsibilities for the series.
