Retailers and restaurants to offer discounts on Oct 1

At least 3,600 restaurants, stores, supermarkets and hotels across Hong Kong will be offering discounts to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the country's founding. Shops taking part in the campaign include supermarkets Wellcome and Parknshop, convenience stores 7-Eleven and CircleK, as well as fast food chains like Maxim's and Fairwood. Also on the list are Ocean Park and leading hotel brands including Marriott, Nina Hospitality Group and Royal Park Hotels. A 30 percent discount will apply to specific products or menu items at most participating outlets. Only a few restaurants, such as Tai Hing, will go further by slashing 30 percent off the entire bill on National Day. Catering sector lawmaker Tommy Cheung explained it was unreasonable to ask all businesses to offer an across-the-board 30 per cent discount. "If we were to ask everybody to do what like Tai Hing is doing now, I think we will be left with a few outlets that are willing to do it," he said. He added he would rather have more shops offering limited discounts, than just a few knocking 30 percent off all every product. The lawmaker would not estimate the extra revenue to be generated from the campaign, emphasising its intention is to celebrate National Day.
