Infuriating last words of death row inmate executed for stamping his baby to death

A man who molested, stamped on and strangled his three-month-old baby called his execution ‘assisted suicide’ in his final words.

Travis Mullis, 38, was killed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, on Tuesday.

He was sentenced in 2008 for killing his baby, but waived his legal right to appeal his execution, instead trying to speed up the process.

In his final statement, he said: ‘I don’t regret this decision to legally expedite this process.

‘I do regret the decision to take the life of my son. It was my decision that put me here.’

He attacked his son Alijiah after trying to rape another child in January 2008, KPRC reports.

He was living at a friend’s house with his girlfriend and baby at the time, alongside the friend’s eight-year-old daughter.

In a confession days after the killing, Mullis said he tried to assault the young girl at a playground.

He told police: ‘I had asked her to take her pants off, she said, “No,’ she started to cry, she got scared, I also got startled.

‘I was upset about what I was doing. I knew that it was wrong. So, I told her, “Let’s just go home”.’

Mullis told his girlfriend what happened, and the couple feared they would be kicked out of the home after the girl’s dad was told.

He then went for a drive with his son to help ‘figure out their next steps’, and he told police the baby had began to cry uncontrollably.

Mullis told police at the time: ‘I had hit my breaking point with stress, and I was, you know, scared.

‘I was panicking, I, you know, hit my breaking point and I broke at that point. I felt that the only way to make him stop crying was to kill him.’

He then strangled and stomped the baby to death.

But police said there was evidence he had also molested the baby before dumping his body on the side of the road.

Mullis went on the run for three days before eventually surrendering himself in Philadelphia.

In 2011 he was sentenced to death, and seven years later he filed a motion to waive his appeals in the hope his execution date would be sped up.

He said: ‘I’m guilty of what I did and the death penalty is legally justified and, I believe morally, sentence for what I’ve done. I’m ready to accept my punishment.’

He was declared dead at 7pm, with no one from his family witnessing it.
