Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud has revealed whether participants are paid for appearing on the hit Channel 4 series.

The show is known for its lengthy filming periods, with builds taking around 17 months to complete on average. And viewers will be familiar with the skyrocketing prices some of the designs cost.

However fans are often left wondering whether those who appear on the show receive a payment from producers. After the show returned yesterday (September) for its 25th anniversary, the 65-year-old presenter has finally answered the question.

When quizzed about compensation for the dedicated homeowners, Kevin revealed: "We don't pay our contributors to appear on Grand Designs, no. They do it out of love and, I think, because they're looking forward to a really nice, expensive looking home video that we prepare for them."

"We do give them a tiny contribution towards their expenses in relation to filming alone. But no, they do it for the joy of it all."

Richard Osman highlighted the issue of filming disrupting the lives of those crafting their dream homes, commenting: "It's literally your own money and that's why I love Grand Designs so much."

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=118222&playerApiId=v118222');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v118222"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript();ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript();ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

Grand Designs Magazine previously reported that there is compensation available, not as an earning but to allow a pause in construction while Kevin tours the impressive projects. This arrangement reportedly aims at "deferring a build" rather than presenting a financial reward.

The report also suggests that the publicity a property receives from featuring on the TV show can be advantageous, with suppliers often eager to negotiate deals if they might get exposure on Channel 4.

There's also a growing trend for Grand Designs properties being available for short-term stays, with some transitioning into private rentals, while others are simply listed for sale.

Grand Designs airs every Wednesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
