Erik ten Hag and Christian Eriksen shocked Manchester United fans by confessing Twente ‘wanted it more’ in their Europa League draw. But it wasn’t the first time that accusation had been thrown at the Red Devils.

The new-look group phase began with United taking on the club their head coach spent a combined 23 years with across three spells as a player and then as a coach. Ten Hag’s reunion started well as Eriksen thundered the hosts into a first-half lead at Old Trafford.

But United lost their way after the break and the Danish midfielder’s error allowed Sam Lammers to seal a famous 1-1 draw for the Eredivisie outfit. Reflecting on the draw, Eriksen admitted to TNT Sports: “Like it just has been said also in the changing room, I think they looked like they wanted it more than us and that can’t be right.”

Those comments were put to Ten Hag in the post-match press conference. He agreed, saying: “Twente, it was the game of their life and they fought for every yard. And, yeah, we didn’t – 99% is not enough.

“You have to give 100%. You have to kill the game, you have to finish it off. We bring the game until the end, but you have to go for the second goal then you kill the game.”

The startling admissions left TNT pundits Owen Hargreaves and Karen Carney dismayed. The latter said: “To hear that, you can’t have that. That’s unacceptable.

“You’re at home, you’re winning, you should want it more and be ruthless. I don’t see the ruthless edge in this team at the minute.”

One of Ten Hag’s predecessors, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, dropped the same bombshell five years ago following a chaotic 3-3 draw Sheffield United. In November 2019, United trailed 2-0 at Bramall Lane before rallying to lead 3-2, only to concede a last-gasp equaliser.

After the game, which saw Solskjaer the subject of ‘Ole out’ calls, the Norwegian admitted: “Sheffield United looked like they wanted it more than us and believed in their game plan more than we did.

“We did not have a shot on target first half which is not acceptable. Sometimes football is beyond tactics.”

That result left United a lowly ninth in the Premier League, although they impressively bounced back with seven points from their next three games against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Tottenham. A home defeat to Watford just before Christmas piled the pressure back on Solskjaer, but United ended the Covid-disrupted season strongly, finishing third to secure a Champions League spot.

The following season, which was played behind closed doors, saw United finish second, 12 points behind City. However, Solskjaer lasted just a few months into the 2021/22 campaign before being sacked following a 4-1 defeat at Watford.
