Brighton vs Nottingham Forest madness as referee issues three cards in a minute

The Premier League clash between Brighton and Nottingham Forest turned volatile when Morgan Gibbs-White was given his marching orders in the final minutes.

Gibbs-White saw red in the 83rd minute for what referee Robert Jones deemed a reckless challenge on Brighton's Joao Pedro.

Initially, Jones appeared to believe Gibbs-White had made a clean tackle, but he reversed his decision and flashed the midfielder a second yellow, sending him off the pitch amidst uproar.

Tempers flared as Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Brighton's technical coach Fabian Hurzeler were both ejected for misconduct, and Forest's Rui Pedro Silva was cautioned in the ensuing fracas on the touchline.

Clarification amid the confusion came courtesy of the Premier League Match Centre's official Twitter feed, confirming: "The referee issued a second yellow card to Gibbs-White for a reckless challenge on Pedro.

"Fabian Hurzeler and Nuno Espirito Santo were both sent off for their unacceptable technical area behaviour following the incident."

Analysing the contentious scenes on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Premier League ace Stephen Warnock weighed in: "Robert Jones the referee will be looking thinking 'is it excessive force or dangerous towards the player?'

"My initial thoughts was Gibbs-White had timed it perfectly, yes he got the player, but looking at the reaction of the bench.

"Fabian Hurzeler and all his staff that are all pointing at the challenge, Pedro has called on the medical staff. Whether Jones has reacted to that."

Gibbs-White was visibly incensed with the decision, launching a verbal tirade at fourth official Anthony Taylor before storming off down the tunnel at the AMEX Stadium.

Despite this, the incident didn't impact the final result, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

Forest's Chris Wood broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Callum Hudson-Odoi was clumsily tackled by Carlos Baleba. However, Brighton quickly retaliated, netting two goals before half-time.

Jack Hinshelwood equalised with a header from a long cross, followed by Danny Welbeck bending a free-kick into the corner from just outside the box.

Forest clawed back a point when substitutes Jota Silva and Ramon Sosa teamed up to create a simple tap-in goal in the 70th minute.

Both teams remain undefeated in the Premier League, each boasting nine points from five games. Brighton edges ahead into seventh place due to their superior goal difference.
